Satchel Paige nominated for Baseball Hall of Fame

1943 – Singer Barbara Lewis, known for #1 R&B song “Hello Stranger” was born in South Lyon, Michigan.

1944 – Novelist Alice Walker, author of “The Color Purple” was born in Eatonton, Georgia.

1953 -Author Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man wins the National Book Award.

[wp_ad_camp_2] 1971 -Negro Leagues standout pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige nominated for Baseball Hall of Fame. He debuted in Major League Baseball at the age of 42 in 1948 and is widely considered one of the greatest pitchers in history.

 

1995 – Bernard Harris becomes the first Black astronaut to take a spacewalk on his second space shuttle mission  as the Payload Commander on STS-63.
